4 Ways To Boost Your Breakfast Smoothie

You probably already know that a smoothie in the morning can be a healthy way to start your day. Here are some quick guidelines on how to make sure you’re morning smoothie is truly healthy and not loaded with tons of sugar and/or too many calories:

  1. Start with a good base, like water or other non-dairy liquid. I love using organic unsweetened vanilla almond as the base of my smoothie. Usually 6-8 ounces is a good start depending on desired consistency.
  2. Add a handful of leafy greens. Grabbing a handful of fresh baby spinach or kale is an awesome way to boost the nutritional value of your smoothie, as well as give you important dietary fiber. Time saving tip! Rinse kale or spinach the night before and store in a refrigerator-safe container so that you save time in the morning. Even bigger time saver: buy the pre-rinsed, organic spinach or kale in the produce section of your favorite grocery store.
  3. Add a cup of frozen or fresh fruit. My favorite fruits to use are organic frozen peaches, strawberries and blueberries. Whatever fruits you like, as a general rule, try not to exceed a cup of fruit so that you minimize the risk of spiking your blood sugar too high.
  4. Choose a nutrient booster. There are lots of great, yet simple ways to hyper-extend the health benefits of your smoothie.

My Favorite Smoothie Boosts

  • Maca Powder: Maca (pronounced MAH cuh) is often called “Peruvian ginseng.” This root belongs to the radish family and has been used for thousands of years by the people of Peru. It’s reported that this superfood helps balance hormone levels, energy and thyroid function. It’s also said that maca root is an aphrodisiac, so its benefits may extend to the bedroom!

My favorite way to add maca to my diet is to add a small scoop of MegaFood Daily Maca Plus to my morning smoothie. What I like about it is that it also contains Ashwagandha, a highly regarded staple of Ayurvedic medicine.   • Plant Energy: while your smoothie may already contain plant goodness from the kale or spinach you added to the blender, let’s say you’re running low on time one morning, but you want a natural, stimulant-free way to boost your energy levels…Just sayin’ – we’re all busy, so it absolutely happens!
