Best Essential Oils for Hair Growth

I am a big fan of essential oils and love to diffuse them in my home for aromatherapy and to apply to my skin for health and wellness benefits. Finding the best essential oils to use for your needs can be a bit of a mystery, so in this article, I help you find the best essential oils for hair growth and vitality.

During a recent visit to my hairdresser, she asked me what I had been doing differently to my  hair. It had been a couple of months since my last visit, and she commented that my hair seemed silkier. I told her I had been using essential oils before I shampoo my hair. She said that she noticed a difference in my hair and even asked me if I had noticed! To be honest, I had not noticed, but I was excited that she saw a difference without me even asking her about it.

My salon visit inspired me to share how I am using essential oils to improve the health of my hair. I have used essential oils for years but applying them to my scalp is fairly new.

Essential oils are liquid substances which are extracted from flowers, grasses, leaves, fruits, roots and trees. They are extracted using a distillation process which allows the oil to keep the characteristics and properties of the plant they came from. Essential oils do more than smell good – they are also known to help address common wellness concerns.

Many women are concerned about having healthy hair, and for some, as we age, our hair loses some of its fullness, length and overall luscious look and feel. Using essential oils on your scalp, in addition, to living a healthy lifestyle are excellent ways to restore vitality to your hair. Here are some of the best essential oils for healthy hair.

  1. Cedarwood – We get many health benefits from this essential oil which comes from cedar trees. Cedarwood is helpful for arthritis and joint pain, coughs and congestion, as well as lack of focus and stress. It is known to be anti-inflammatory and astringent to skin. Cedarwood essential oil can stimulate the hair follicles and increase circulation to the scalp.
  2. Rosemary – Rosemary is considered to have more than a thousand uses. Most commonly attributed to seasoning sumptuous Italian dishes, this powerhouse herb has antibacterial qualities and is also known to stimulate hair follicles and increase scalp circulation. I love the gentle tingle on my scalp when I use Rosemary essential oils.
  3. Clary Sage – Clary Sage essential oil is personally one of my favorite scents. This herb is a woman’s best friend. It has hormone balancing qualities, in addition to its incredible fragrance. For hair and scalp purposes, Clary Sage balances oil production on the scalp and could be best suited for those with a tendency towards an oily scalp.
  4. Ylang Ylang – (pronounced “Lang Lang”) is a beautiful floral essential oil and is most beneficial for individuals with a dry, itchy scalp. Ylang Ylang is known to stimulate sebum, the scalp’s natural moisturizer.

DIY Recipe: Essential Oil Elixir for Hair Growth

How To Use:

  1. Combine in a small hair applicator bottle, give it a swish and shake, and then apply directly to scalp.
  2. Leave on your scalp for at least 20 minutes, longer if possible. I like to apply the Hair Growth Essential Oil Elixir on my scalp about two hours before I shampoo and sometimes I leave on overnight. If you decide to leave on overnight, be sure to protect your bed linens.
  3. Shampoo, condition and style hair as desired.
  4. Use this DIY treatment once a week.

Remember, any improvement in hair growth or thickness is going to take time, and I make no claim to guarantee results. Most hair stylists and dermatologists will tell you it takes around six months to see improvements. Try to be patient, and most of all, try to be consistent.
